People who analyze movies to find hidden meanings have always been good at making bizarre connections between films and uncovering underlying messages. They’ve devised theories about possible secrets concealed in the Star Wars world and how plots of different movies might be connected in unlikely ways. These theories are so entertaining that people can keep discussing them for hours. Some creative and peculiar fan theories have existed long, while others may be fresh. These ideas range from unpredictable conspiracies to unexplainable supernatural events and much more.

A Look At Some Of The Top Twenty Darkest Movie Theories Ever Put Forward

1. The Shining is a Metaphor For Native American Genocide: It’s theorized that Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror film, The Shining, is a metaphor for the genocide of Native Americans. The Overlook Hotel is said to represent the white invaders who came in and stole away their land. At the same time, Jack Torrance, played by Jack Nicholson, stands in for the Native American people trying to protect their way of life from destruction.

2. Jurassic Park Is About Creationism vs. Evolution: This theory states that Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster dinosaur movie, Jurassic Park, is about the clash between creationist beliefs and evolutionary science. In the film, Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), an outspoken advocate of evolution, hits with John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), a wealthy scientist whose ambition is to bring dinosaurs back to life using technology instead of natural selection.

3. The Matrix trilogy mainly represents brainwashing and deception. Neo (Keanu Reeves) reveals that he has been living in a simulated reality created by machines, an allegory of how forces can often manipulate our lives without us even realizing it.

4. Star Wars Is About Space Colonialism: It’s suggested that George Lucas’ epic space saga is about space colonialism. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) represents the oppressed struggling against tyrannical oppressors such as the Empire. At the same time, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) symbolizes those individuals who fight for freedom rather than accept subjugation.

5. Some believe that “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy tells a hidden allegory about World War II. The “Fellowship of the Ring” represents the allies, such as the United States and Great Britain, while Sauron’s forces symbolize the Nazis in this theory.

6. According to some “Star Wars” fans, Darth Vader led Anakin Skywalker to his descent into darkness by accessing an alternate form of the dark side of the force known as ‘The Black,’ which gave him enhanced power to use the energy for evil.

7. Another fan favorite is that Jim Carrey’s character, Truman Burbank, in “The Truman Show,” lives in a massive reality show where he unknowingly plays the starring role. This narrative provokes thoughts about reality and whether people ultimately control their lives.

8. The theory surrounding “The Lion King” suggests that Simba is dead throughout the movie. This tale is a deep symbolic look at death, where Simba has to come to terms with the gravity of his actions to cross over into the equivalent of lion Heaven.

9. Inception: A popular fan theory postulates that Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) never escaped from limbo at the end of Christopher Nolan’s classic sci-fi thriller. Instead, Dom remains in eternal dream limbo, unable to escape because he still has unresolved trauma from his past.

10. IT: Some fans believe that the novel and film adaptation of Stephen King’s classic horror novel is part of a massive allegory for religious hypocrisy. The idea is that the group of children in the story symbolizes innocence lost to religion. At the same time, Pennywise’s fear-inducing tactics represent the dangers of blindly following a faith instead of questioning it.

11. Harry Potter: This popular fan theory suggests that Dumbledore planned his death to use love’s power to defeat Voldemort. By sacrificing himself, Dumbledore was able to give Harry strength to continue and save Hogwarts from destruction at the hands of Lord Voldemort.

Another theory revolves around the role of Hermione Granger, played by actress Emma Watson in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. According to this theory, Hermione played multiple versions of herself throughout the movie — each subtly different from the last. This theory is based on a scene early in the film where Severus Snape appears to be talking to three Hermiones simultaneously, suggesting that more than one version of her character might exist within J.K Rowling’s wizarding world.

12. Aliens: A widely accepted fan theory suggests that the Xenomorph in Ridley Scott’s classic science fiction horror was not created by a hostile alien race but rather by an ancient Earth civilization. This theory suggests that this species of extraterrestrials were once masters of genetic engineering and used their DNA to create the Xenomorph as a weapon of mass destruction.

13. The Twin Peaks theory is another popular one among show fans. This theory proposes two worlds in Twin Peaks: our world (the Red Room) and an alternate universe (the Black Lodge). The show’s protagonist, Cooper, travels between these two realms to investigate strange occurrences. While the theory is interesting, it has yet to be proven or disproven.

14. Next up, we have the Back to the Future theory, which suggests that Marty McFly and Doc Brown are two versions of the same person from different timelines. This idea is based on a mathematical equation (the Grandfather Paradox) which states that if someone travels through time and meets their younger self, they will become a single person in two separate timelines. The theory is highly debated but very fun to explore!

15. Everything in Inception Is Taking Place Inside Cobb’s Dream – This popular theory suggests that the entire plotline of Christopher Nolan’s complex heist thriller takes place inside Cobb’s dream world.

Other of the Top 20 Movies With Weird and Crazy Theories

16. Forrest Gump Is Dreaming the Entire Movie – This theory suggests that, like Inception, Forrest Gump’s entire life story occurs inside his head as he dreams away in his rocking chair.

17. Fight Club Is Really About Tyler Durden’s Dissociative Identity Disorder. This interpretation suggests that all of the events in Fight Club are simply a result of Tyler Durden’s dissociation from his mental illness.

18. The Wizard Of Oz Asks ‘What If You Could Go Home?’ – It has been suggested that the tale of Dorothy and her friends is a story about the power of nostalgia and the longing for home.

19. The Terminator Is About AI Taking Over – Some believe that James Cameron’s sci-fi action flick is an allegory for artificial intelligence taking over in the future.

20. Jurassic Park Is About Human Extinction – An interesting theory about this dino blockbuster claims it’s about humankind being brought down by its creation and hubris.

These are just a few of the many strange movie theories out there, but they all prove one thing: approaches can make any movie infinitely more interesting! Whatever your opinion on these wild theories, there’s no denying they offer plenty of food for thought. The film industry is an industry that specializes in the production of films and animation, as well as special effects for them. It is growing rapidly, having a serious impact on society. This impact is mostly positive. Films show finished visual images that evoke a lively emotional response.

History of the film industry

The film industry in the world does not stand still, constantly innovating – it is a special area of art, counting a lot of fans. Films today are shot in a variety of genres, studios offer products for every taste.

December 28, 1895 is considered the birthday of cinematography. That day in the capital of France on Boulevard des Capuchins in the “Grand Cafe” was organized the first movie screening. The public was delighted, and the creation of film companies and studios began all over the world. Soon cinema became mass entertainment.

The first films were made in black and white and lasted less than a minute – there was no soundtrack. It was just one single frame, shot with a static camera. Cinematography evolved over time, with editing, mobile cameras, and other cinematic techniques. Special effects began to be used in films from the late 1890s.

The Lumiere brothers were able to build a business on the creation of a network of cinemas. It was they who presented the franchise, and their partners began organizing film screenings.

The first film in the sci-fi genre, as well as a horror film, was made by the Frenchman Georges Méliès. “Close-up” came about thanks to the American David Griffith, he is called the founder of “Hollywood directing.”

The influence of the film industry on the culture of society

The modern film industry captivates by its versatility, has a positive impact on society, which is:

-in broadening the mind’s horizons;

-development of creativity;

-getting a lot of new information about the world around us.

Cinema shapes the reality in which we exist, from mere entertainment it has become a powerful lever of influence. Cinema constructs our beliefs and even romanticizes wars. Modern man is steadily sitting on the needle of cinema. People get drunk on ideas borrowed from films – it happens on a subconscious level. The audience is maximally involved in the events on the screen and all thanks to the competent direction, an interesting script, and special effects.

Regular viewing of films allows you to learn a lot about the reality surrounding them, develop the ability to think creatively.

People increasingly go to the movies to gain life experience, to expand what they already have. They empathize with the characters, often copying their behavior.

Cinema also affects the fashion of the female body. In the fifties of the twentieth century, the style icon was considered Marilyn Monroe, and in the 2000’s almost all women wanted to imitate Angelina Jolie. For a long time, the cinema promoted fashion for skinny women, but gradually the situation began to change.

You can watch movies at home and in the theater. This kind of leisure brings relatives closer together, changes the perception of reality.

By movies you can study history, they bring to life the images of historical characters, transferring to other eras. Original stories capture the attention of viewers, complemented by vivid special effects.

Some people show a desire to be like the characters in films, and this does not always go to the benefit. The influence of the movie industry can be both positive and negative.

Some movies are dominated by sex scenes, while others, on the contrary, prioritize a deep story. Genre diversity is a huge plus, satisfying different tastes.

Cult Films

There are many cult films that are considered classics in the film industry. They are watched by viewers of all ages, doing so many times.

An example of this is Gladiator, which won the Academy Award for best film in 2001. This film is about the political situation of the Roman Empire and the life of gladiators. Although the plot is fictional, still captures the attention of the audience, gives a clear idea of the culture of the ancient Romans, makes you empathize with the characters.

Cult films in fact, a lot, and in different genres.

For example, Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott, shot in 1982, but still very popular. Or “Mad Dogs” by Quentin Tarantino, released in 1991.

A lot of positive reviews has “Fight Club”, filmed in 1991, starring Brad Pitt.

From older films, A Clockwork Orange, which conquered the world in 1971, stood out.

And how can you be without the famous “Star Wars” – a film about what is happening in other galaxies.

Almost everyone has seen “Pulp Fiction”, telling three criminal stories.

In 1999, “The Matrix” was released, which conquered the fans of the fantasy genre.

Let us not forget the “Terminator” with Arnold Schwarzenegger, which turned into a real saga.

Of the melodramas, “Pretty Woman” with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere stands out.

This list could go on and on, including “Forrest Gump”, “The Godfather” and other films that have become classics.

The impact of the film industry on society and modern man cannot be denied. People eagerly go to the cinemas, follow the novelties, and wait for the sequels of their favorite pictures. Almost everyone has their own favorites among actors, directors, and screenwriters. Interesting movies brighten up evenings and weekends, and make you forget about your own problems. Cinematography can safely be called a social tool, it has a great future.

Although it’s just the start of December, there’s no better time to get your festive mood on with the best Christmas movies of all time. The air is getting crispier, and the jingle bells will soon become inescapable. So, of course, this means it’s Christmas movie season, and luckily, we have a lot of content to explore.

We’ve collected a list of the best Christmas movies to get your festive mood this Christmas season. Our list ranges from the classics to modern hits. So, without further ado, grab some popcorn and snuggle in to watch these five best Christmas movies.

  1. Love Actually (2003)

A few movies have been accepted and loved, like Richard Curtis’s 2003 holiday movie of new love, old love, and dying love. Love Actually is corny and can be annoyingly simplistic in its take on love. However, there’s so much going on in this Christmas movie that you can’t help but love.

This movie follows a web-like pattern of loosely related stories of nine individuals with love lives, or the lack of it. So, if you’re not interested in the silly storyline of Brits who travel to America to test the theory that their accent will make them more attractive to women, you can focus on the tale of infidelity starring Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman. The movie also features Bill Nighy’s performance as a washed-up rockstar made miserable by his success.

  1. Falling for Christmas (2022)

Falling for Christmas is a new hit to get your Christmas mood this festive season. This movie brings the return of Lindsey Lohan, an early-2000s teen queen, to our screens as a spoiled hotel heiress, Sierra. She is diagnosed with amnesia after a skiing accident and is kept under the care of a handsome, rustic lodge owner until she regains her memory.

This Christmas movie is filled with cliches and even features Lohan covering ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ 18 years after Mean Girls. But there’s so much to fall for in this cute holiday rom-com, making this the greatest Christmas gift from Netflix.

  1. The Princess Switch (2018-2021)

The Christmas movie list won’t be complete without a mention of The Princess Switch. This franchise is well onto its third movie and has won over millions of users with its charm and the joyful escapism it offers.

Although the identity-swapping story is quite simple, it doesn’t make it any less exciting or fun to watch. The first film follows Margaret, Duchess of Montenaro, who switches places with Stacy, a Chicago commoner who looks precisely like her a week before Christmas.

With a few nudges from a magical Santa helper, Margaret falls in love with Stacy’s handsome co-worker, while Stacy falls in love with Margaret’s fiancée, a dashing prince. The next two movies bring the accession story to the throne, with plenty of romance and fun in store. The Princess Switch is the perfect trilogy to get wrapped up at Christmas.

  1. The Knight Before Christmas (2019)

Like the Princess Switch, this is another of Vanessa Hudgens’s Christmas movies. Many viewers would argue that The Knight Before Christmas is even better. In this film, Hudgens plays a single young lady who meets a medieval knight magically transported to her small town at Christmas.

The Christmas rom-com follows the duo as she teaches him about modern life, including navigating Netflix on her TV. If you want to bring on the spirit of Christmas, then you should watch this extremely festive Christmas movie.

  1. Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)

For anyone looking for a festive musical that brings an important life message, look no further than Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey. This movie follows the story of Jeronicus Jangle, an inventor who loses his passion for life after a personal tragedy. Luckily, a visit from his granddaughter, a bright little girl called Journey, is all the spark he needs to reawaken his enthusiasm.

We follow the duo on their race to thwart an evil scheme by his former apprentice-turned-rival. Can they stop him, or are they too late? Grab your popcorn and find out in this movie.

Conclusion

This is the time of the year when we treat ourselves to a feel-good Christmas movie or five. We’re here to ensure your Christmas is the best it can be with a collection of the best Christmas movies to get your festive mood on. As we brave the snowy weather and the non-stop shopping for gifts and stocking stuffer, you can take a break in the warm glow of your TV with these five Christmas movies and a big bowl of popcorn, of course.

The movie industry is known for its constant innovation and development. Although the industry is barely a century old, film production and distribution methods have constantly changed. However, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed much, and that’s the financing of most movies, especially independent films.

It’s become increasingly challenging to bring indie movies into the market. This is evident in the current box office crisis rocking Italy. Raising the necessary financing is a big challenge unaffected by technological advancement in the entire industry. This is where crypto enters the picture. For those with little information about cryptocurrencies, it is a digital currency maintained and verified by a decentralized system.

If you know about cryptocurrencies, you’re aware that there are various platforms where you can buy and trade cryptos. But even despite the popularity of these types ofassets, they are not available on all known platforms (for example, the Fineco Trading platform does not provide an opportunity to trade crypto). At the same time, the choice of platforms where you can trade crypto is huge! One such brokers is XM Broker (https://brokerschart.it/migliori-brokers/xm). In any case, before investing, check out the offers of the most popular brokers on the market: you may find a companion in the world of trading that does not offer trading in cryptocurrencies but at the same time, offers very favorable conditions for other types of assets (for example, Libertex –  https://brokerschart.it/migliori-brokers/libertex).

Limited Financing Options for Italian Movies

Although many Italian movies are being made, it is clear that people aren’t coming out to watch them. The Italian movie industry hasn’t bounced back from the COVID slump. There’s no audience for Italian indie films, making it difficult to find financing. On the other hand, studio titles have been making waves. This is evident in the release of Minions: The Rise of Gru. This Universal animated hit grossed over $10 million in Italy after two weeks of release.

There are only a handful of financing options for filmmakers in Italy. Competition is fierce for grants, and although debt financing is available, it is a high risk for filmmakers if their movie doesn’t perform as anticipated. With the poor performance of local films at the box office, private investors consider filmmaking too high a risk.

Another option available for Italian filmmakers is crowdfunding. However, this is limited in its success because filmmakers can offer meaningful incentives to fans as investors. However, crowdfunding for movies takes a different dimension when blockchain and cryptos enter the equation.

NFTs – Creating New Revenue Streams for Italian Filmmakers

NFTs took the whole world by storm in 2021, with digital artists like Beeple selling their NFT collection for $69 million in March. Therefore, it has provided a new way for Italian filmmakers to generate value from their movies.

In 2021, EY announced its collaboration with CinTech, an Italian startup in the blockchain industry, to create NFTs for the 22 main scenes of an award-winning Italian film, La Leggenda Di Kaspar Hauser. This innovative project was the first to utilize NFTs in driving value for the Italian film industry. It showed the potential to leverage blockchain and its ability to benefit the film industry. In addition, this project helped to create new revenue streams and financing sources for filmmakers.

For Italian filmmakers, this was a game-changer. Although filmmakers offer digital rewards like access to never-before-seen footage, artworks, or posters, this isn’t as valuable as making them into NFTs. Issuing these rewards as NFT and ensuring a reliable market for such assets will provide filmmakers with a lucrative source of revenue.

This way, fans can own a liquid piece of intellectual property related to their favorite movies. This strategy will also create a deep and symbolic relationship between filmmakers and fans.

Token-Based Voting Systems to Give Fans a Voice

Before fundraising, Italian filmmakers can gauge their audience sentiments by utilizing a token-based voting system. This is similar to the strategy used by Deadpool and Sonic the Hedgehog producers. These movies only made it into production because of fan pressure. A token-based voting system helps fans influence certain decisions in the film while providing a source of funding for filmmakers.

A token-based voting system will allow fans to control the direction of their favorite movies. Fans can buy tokens and have a chance to vote on which movie will be made, serving as a form of investment by movie fans.

Broad Opportunities in the Crypto Space

Cryptocurrencies provide Italian filmmakers with new opportunities to finance movies. Allowing fans to determine which films get made and funded will help solve the ‘quality over quantity’ crisis in the Italian movie industry. Beyond fan approval, there are many innovations blockchain technology brings into the movie industry. Each of the use cases here can provide more financing for Italian filmmakers.

Over the years, movies have told stories about robots in a variety of genres and formats. These include sci-fi action films about war with humanity, melodramatic love stories, and post-apocalyptic survival thrillers.

Ich bin dein Mensch, 2021

By the will of fate, she becomes a participant in a unique experiment: within three weeks, Alma is to test an innovative android designed specifically for her. According to the scientists’ idea, such androids are supposed to become soulmates for lonely people of the planet.

“I was made for you” is the fourth feature film by actress and director Maria Schrader, presented in the main competition of the Berlin festival in 2021. Artificial Intelligence (AI) – the solution to our problems or the path to ruin? This question has been perturbed the minds of filmmakers for decades. In Gavin Rothery’s film, young cybernetic scientist George, played by Theo James (“Tablets of Fate,” “Downton Abbey”), prepares to discover a possible answer.
George is working on artificial intelligence in a laboratory lost somewhere in the backwoods of Japan. He wants to create an intelligent android and upload into it the consciousness of his dead wife.

Robot Riot, 2020.

At the beginning of the film, the American soldiers wake up in the middle of the range, and they have no weapons and do not remember how they got here. Pretty soon they will have to engage in combat with out-of-control robots controlled by artificial intelligence.
“Rise of the Robots” is a sci-fi action movie set in a world of the conditional future where humanity is on the brink of extinction. The planet’s resources are depleted, the population is dwindling. And in this environment, mad scientists and authorities decide to rely on robots, and train their fighting qualities on humans.

Alita: Battle Angel, 2019

The events of “Alita” are set on a mythical future Earth – in the 26th century, 300 years after the Great War. Who, for what and with whom fought – no one can no longer remember, but the world after this catastrophe has changed beyond recognition.

The segregation of rich and poor has reached an unprecedented scale. The elite live in the Flying City, while the rest survive in the Lower World, amidst crime and ecological crisis. One day in the city dump, Dr. Ido, played by Christoph Waltz, finds the remains of a female cyborg. The doctor manages to revive the robot: it turns out to be Alita, a combat android with a completely erased memory.

Zoe, 2018
Country: USA
Genres: Sci-fi, Melodrama
Back to the world of melodramatic sci-fi. Director Drake Dorimus (“Equals,” “Love for Three”) told the story of two scientists, Zoe and Cole, starring Lea Seydoux and Ewan McGregor. Is a world without lonely people a utopia or a very realistic future? Heroes scientists hope to eradicate such a concept as unrequited love, and invented synthetics – the perfect romantic robot partners.

Meanwhile, Zoe feels like she’s falling in love with Cole. Alas, tests show that the two coworkers have 0% compatibility. But that’s not the most frightening discovery: one day Zoe discovers that she herself is a synthetic. Other androids realize that they are programmed, and only for Seydoux’s heroine all feelings are real, like a human. What will the artificial intelligence do when it realizes it has been rejected?

American Horror Story, 2011
Country: USA
Genres: Horror, Thriller, Drama
Ryan Murphy – a man who never sleeps, and year after year manages to give viewers a new portion of his unconventional stories. The anthology series “American Horror Story” is one of the most successful projects of the famed director, maintaining the highest ratings for ten years. During the existence of the series, the authors managed to collect the most impressive collection of chilling images and plots: haunted houses, witches, maniacs, mental hospitals, run-down hotels and that’s just the very beginning of the list. Each season has a different concept and story, so you can start watching any season.

Twin Peaks, 1990.
Country: USA
Genres: Thrillers, Crime, Detectives
Directors: David Lynch, Leslie Link Glatter, Caleb Deschanel
“Who Killed Laura Palmer?” – you’ve probably heard that question, even if you missed David Lynch and Mark Frost’s masterpiece about a small-town murder mystery. The mystery project spawned a huge number of theories and kept fans waiting for the sequel for a full 27 years!

“Twin Peaks” begins as an ordinary crime drama set in a small town frozen in time. Frame by frame, minute by minute, Lynch in his unique style immerses us in a surreal, supernatural and eerily strange plot. FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle McLocklen) arrives in Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of young girl Laura Palmer (Cheryl Lee). The schoolgirl’s body is found wrapped in plastic on the riverbank. Tragedy follows, with a series of events that gradually reveal the secrets of everyone in the town. The lingering multi-part series is a perfect blend of 90’s aesthetics, melodramatic elements and slightly oddball characters from the American outback.

Penny Dreadful, 2014.
Country: USA, Ireland, UK
Genres: Horror, Drama, Fantasy
Imagine that all your favorite characters of dystopian novels gathered in one place and at one time. That’s roughly what the creators of Scary Tales did: Dorian Gray, Frankenstein, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – cursed characters roam the streets of Victorian London, while unsuspecting townsfolk are absorbed in a dreary routine. But for every fiend there is a hunter of the supernatural. Pursue the villains will take none other than Van Helsing (David Warner). At the center of the fight against the otherworldly – a lonely American Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), burdened with a complicated past and his own demons.

The lavish costume drama ran for only three seasons on Showtime, but its memorable characters, gothic setting and mystical mood left a lasting impression on viewers and gathered a crowd of fans around it. The authors follow in the footsteps of Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, and Oscar Wilde and tell spooky dark stories in the setting of nineteenth-century England – better than which no one has yet devised for stories about vampires, ghosts, and witches.

Castle Rock, 2018
Country: USA

Genres: Thrillers, Horror, Sci-Fi
On a list like ours, you can’t do without adaptations of Stephen King’s books. The following psychological thriller with elements of horror takes inspiration from the works of the honored king of horror. Here is a familiar character from the books of the master Alan Pangborn, and the prison Shawshank. And even the name of the series refers to a fictional place in Maine – that’s where the events of many of the author’s books unfold.

Curiously enough, King himself, as an executive producer, did not interfere in the process of creating the plot. Showrunners Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason decided to tell an original story, but with a veneer of King’s novels. The first season focuses on lawyer Henry Deaver (Andre Holland), who returns to his hometown after an unknown young man (Bill Skarsgard) is found in the local jail under mysterious circumstances.

The Outsider, 2020
Country: USA
Genres: Thrillers, Detectives, Crime
“The Outsider” is another Stephen King adaptation that has organically formed the basis of a mini-series. It’s a chilly morning, a small town, a dead boy – already scary. Arriving on the scene, Detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) realizes that a murder has occurred. All evidence points to Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman), the young baseball players’ coach. Soon the investigation comes to a dead end: it turns out that the main suspect was in another town at the time of the crime. While the whole town thinks he’s guilty, the police sheriff realizes that the case is shrouded in a frightening mystery.

Chinese history in films https://www.lordofwarthemovie.com/chinese-history-in-films/ Sat, 09 Mar 2019 08:00:00 +0000 https://www.lordofwarthemovie.com/?p=28 There are probably enough plots from Chinese history for several dozen disaster movies, mystical thrillers, sad tales of a lost paradise

There are probably enough plots from Chinese history for several dozen disaster movies, mystical thrillers, sad tales of a lost paradise, and multi-volume epics. That’s what Chinese (and not only) filmmakers have been doing successfully for years. We tell you about the most fascinating pages of Chinese history transferred to the big screens.

Chi bi, 2008.
Country: China, Hong Kong, Japan
Genres: War, Historical, Biography
Not just a historical film, but a full-blown epic about the origins of China. One of the most important writers of national cinema, John Woo has brought to the screen a seminal Oriental literary work – the 14th century novel “The Three Kingdoms” by Lo Guanzhong. So the sweep of the story of where the land of China came from is evident in The Battle of Red Rock.

The result: the history of unification of disparate states into unified China is shown here with all imaginable scope and in the format of a spectacular war drama with spectacular duels, massive battle scenes and breathtaking panoramas. Wu spares no expense to make the viewer watch with open mouth as the small kingdoms defend themselves against the imperial armies led by the conniving politician Cao Cao.

Ying, 2018.
Country: China, Hong Kong
Genres: Drama, Action
An incredibly beautiful and expressive costume drama by the true king of the genre, the great Zhang Yimou. Like The Battle of Red Cliff, The Shadow is a story from the colorful and legendary times of the Three Kingdoms, the controversial unity of the three states within the borders of China. Yimou builds an entire plot, complex and polyphonic, on just one fact.

In ancient times, warlords and aristocrats were supposed to have a double who would fight for them on the battlefield and risk his own life to create glory for his lords. Imou superimposes the intrigue of the relationship between the shadow and its master, slave and master, on real historical events, ancient stories and tales, resulting in a broad panorama of a harsh feudal world built on blood and doomed to perdition. The film premiered in out of competition at the Venice Film Festival. Yimou won the Golden Lion twice before, in 1992 for “Qiu Qiu Goes to Court,” and in 1999 for “Not One Less.

The Last Emperor, 1987
Countries: China, Italy, UK
Genres: Drama
Paradoxically, a great film power was given one of the major statements on national history by a foreigner. Bernardo Bertolucci, the outstanding storyteller and master of visual games, could not get past the dramatic and touching story of the last ruler of the Chinese Empire, the minor Pu Yi. In his interpretation, the biography of the little boy who became the lord of the empire became a legend of power that destroys and corrupts.

Xin hai ge ming, 2011
Country: China, Hong Kong
Genres: Action, Adventure, Drama
The most unusual work of the king of action comedy Jackie Chan. Not only did he sit in the director’s chair, he also played the portrait role of Huang Xing, the founder of the army of the Republic of China. Chan’s portrayal is exemplary in its historical revolution: a chronicle of how a fire ignites from a spark and a storm erupts from a single protest that sweeps away a thousand-year-old empire, decrepit and mired in petty squabbles, formalities and ceremonies.

There are also expressive portraits of the main characters, shown with all conceivable expressiveness and impact: the warrior Huang Xin, the democrat Sun Yat-sen, and the revolutionary dictator Yuan Shikai.

The White Countess, 2005.
Country: USA, UK, China
Genres: Drama
Hardly the most curious look at Chinese history – at least because here it is attempted to make sense of it exclusively by foreigners. The plot is based on the novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro, a Japanese living in Britain and a Nobel Prize winner. The source material was translated onto the screen by Briton James Ivory, with Ralph Fiennes and Natasha Richardson in the lead roles.

Empire of the Sun, 1987.
Country: USA
Genres: Drama, Historical, War

Another film which was an important contribution to the historical genre in Chinese cinema was Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster starring a young Christian Bale. While Bertolucci gave Chinese cinema an epic scope and theatricality, Spielberg managed to put the stories of one of the most closed countries in the world into a global context.

Jin ling shi san chai, 2011
Country: China, Hong Kong
Genres: Drama
Barely the biggest and most dramatic blockbuster based on national history. The acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, who also directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, chronicled the bloody and gruesome Nanjing Massacre using every imaginable means of expression: Christian Bale in the title role, visionary cameraman Zhao Xiaoding and writer Yan Gelin’s sweeping narration. The result is an exceptionally moving, complex, contradictory story of wandering and rescue during a global cataclysm.

Kung Fury, 2015
Country: Sweden
Genres: Fantastic, Action, Comedy
Miami, 1985. The most dangerous criminal of all time, Adolf Hitler, nicknamed Kung Führer, appears in a coastal city. Supercop Kung Fury decides to travel back in time to Nazi Germany to kill Hitler and end the Nazi empire.

Perhaps the most famous crowdfunded film in the world remains the comedy action film Kung Fury. The project’s author, Swedish director David Sandberg, began raising money on the Kickstarter platform in 2013 and ended up raising over $600,000, triple the amount originally announced. Such a huge budget allowed the filmmakers to go full throttle and invite iconic actor David Hasselhoff for one of the roles, who also recorded the title theme of True Survivor for the film.

The film premiered in 2013 as part of the out-of-competition program at the Cannes Film Festival. It was later made freely available on YouTube, where it was viewed more than 30 million times worldwide.

Iron Sky, 2012
Country: Finland, Germany, Australia
Seventy years ago, the unscathed Nazis flew to the moon. Now that their gigantic revenge fleet is almost complete, they decide to give Earth another blitzkrieg. The American government and ordinary citizens of the United States have to fight an unequal battle against the representatives of the Fourth Reich and save the world.

Another record-breaking fundraiser hailing from Scandinavia is Finnish director Timo Vuorensola’s absurdist comedy action film Iron Sky. It took six years to create it, and originally the film was not planned to be shot with public funds. Only after several unsuccessful attempts to raise funding by traditional means the director posted several teasers on YouTube, which attracted public attention. As a result of the campaign launched, more than 1.2 million euros were raised.

Veronica Mars, 2014
Country: USA, UK, France
Sheriff’s daughter Veronica Mars previously investigated the most mysterious crimes in the city of Neptune. After leaving for New York City and getting a job as a lawyer at a good firm, she was sure she’d broken out of the loop. But it’s not that simple. Her ex-boyfriend Logan Echols is accused of killing his girlfriend. Deciding to help him, Veronica returns to Neptune and begins her own investigation.
Shortly after the closure of the popular CW series, the author of the adventures of the schoolgirl detective Rob Thomas planned to make a feature-length sequel. But the management of the studio Warner Bros. did not give his project the green light. Therefore, to realize the idea, he turned to fans and was heard. Launched on Kickstarter campaign turned out to be one of the most successful in the history of cinema. In a day the authors collected 1 million dollars, and in a month – 6 million. This money was more than enough to shoot the movie, but the result was not successful. Despite the praise of critics and fans, the picture failed at the U.S. box office, earning only 3.5 million dollars, barely covering half the budget.

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, 2014
Country: USA
Dr. Hess Green comes into contact with a strange artifact brought back from Africa and soon learns with horror that he has been cursed. Now the hero experiences an irrepressible and constantly tormenting thirst for blood. However, he has not become a vampire, he has no fangs, and he is not afraid of sunlight. Soon the hero meets a strange yet beautiful woman who explains to him what happened to him.
Perhaps the most amazing story happened to Spike Lee, who in 2014 conceived of making an unofficial remake of the iconic 1973 horror film Ganja and Hess. The original film went down in history as one of the first “black horror films,” and starred Dwayne Jones of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. To realize his idea, the director organized a successful fundraising campaign on the Kickstarter platform. As a result, Spike Lee raised $ 1.4 million, of which $10,000 was donated by Steven Spielberg himself.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, 2014
Location: USA
In Bad City, vampires, prostitutes, drug addicts, pimps, loan sharks, and more. A girl dressed in black rides a skateboard and seeks out new victims under the cover of night.
The film was the debut of British-American director Ana Lily Amirpour. The experimental black-and-white Iranian vampire western was made for only $60,000 raised on the Indiegogo platform. The producer attributed the success of the crowdfunding campaign to the inclusion of unusual bonuses in the standard set of contribution acknowledgements. Potential investors were offered to name the streets of the fictional Bad City, where the film takes place, in their honor. And invested more than $ 5 thousand promised a trip to the festival, along with the crew. Agreed, not a bad investment.
